Benny Smith passed from this life on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky. He was loved by many and he loved more than his big heart could hold. Benny loved and protected his family fiercely.
Benny was known throughout the Russell County School System as “Mr. Benny”, encouraging each and every child he could to “just do their best”. Benny loved to garden and can his own food, fish every chance he could, go hunting with his boys, read Louis L’Amour books and spend time with his family. One of his favorite sayings was “pace yourself”.
Mr. Benny was born at Somerset City Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky on May 24, 1962, to the late Lucille Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Smith; two sons, Kyle Smith (and fiancé Madeline Cain) and Alex Smith; and a daughter, Breonna Smith, all of Russell Springs. He is also survived by a twin sister, Colleen Burton (and husband Randy), of Russell Springs; brothers David Smith, of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Jimmy Smith (and wife Julie), of Columbia, Kentucky. A host of other family and friends that Benny cherished also survive.
He will be missed by many as he was one-of-a-kind and unforgettable. Many have called Benny “The Legend”. He was a truly remarkable man.
